Carpe Diem!? Impossible!

It’s a warm February morning.

The wind is coming in from the southwest and except for where the snow was packed high, everything is green. Runner’s are taking to High Park in shorts and dog owners have removed the jackets of their beloved animals. The commuter is walking to the subway a bit quicker as she is a few pounds lighter: her heavy beige uptown coat has been replaced. Gloves are left at home and scarves are kept inside closets.

But I know this won’t last.

I know it’s just El Niño.

I know it’s just a tease.

I know it’s just like the girl that plays with my emotions.

I know it’s temporary.

I know it’s just a season within a season.

By tomorrow morning it’ll be freezing and shortly after that the wind will choose to suspend its hope and the ground will clothe itself back in white.

This is the way it is.

Seasons within seasons. Blended into the Cold Harsh Season is a moment of warmth. It’s quick and it’s futuristic. It gives a glimpse of what is to come. It gives you a taste, but not the whole meal. It shows you the light at the end of the tunnel and you’re fairly certain that it is the light at the other end and not just a train coming to take you out of your misery. It’s almost like a promise. It’s almost as if the wind is saying, “I’ll let you feel your fingers and toes today but today and today only!” So you are able to leave that coat at home today but not all week. You’ll have to weigh yourself down with it tomorrow.

But it isn’t tomorrow! It isn’t yesterday! It isn’t even today!

It’s right now!

And “right now” you need to make some choices. You need to decide what to do at this very moment. Whether thinking deciding what you’ll wear or what you’ll say to him, you need to make the choice that is right in front of you!

Carpe Diem?

NO!

IMPOSSIBLE!!!!

It is impossible to “carpe diem”! How can You seize a day? Maybe you live somehow outside of time and look at time as I look at this coffee mug: as a three dimensional shape which I can take hold of. Can you look at time like that? Can you stand above it?

You can’t take hold of an entire day! You can’t seize an entire day in one moment. A day is comprised with hundreds and thousands of choices that are directly in front of you at different moments! And these choices direct you to one distinct end or another. Every choice! Every decision leads you closer to one place and further from another place.

The promises you made 49 days ago will only come to fruition if you deal with the choices directly in front of you!

So here you are. It’s a warm February morning and you must look both forward and backward.

You learn by looking backwards but you live by looking forwards. So you need two sets of eyes. One to constantly be looking forwards and one to constantly be looking backwards. The minute you look ONLY backwards you miss it! You miss the girl standing directly in front of you. You miss the warm air waiting to be enjoyed. You miss the cheap flight you could have grabbed. You miss it!

But ONLY looking forward is no better. By turning your back on the past you turn your back on what you learned and by turning you back on what you learned you turn your back on your mistakes and by turning your back on your mistakes you end up making more of the same!

So don’t enjoy today! Enjoy RIGHT NOW and make the choice which is the only choice you can make at this moment.

How about “Carpe Momento” then, Mike?

Speaking of which…how’d your race go earlier today? Megan and I were talking about you and sending positive vibes your way. I hope really well, yes? See you Tuesday AM…

      Carpe Momento. I like it.
Thanks Kevin. It went as well as could be expected considering what we’ve been doing for training. Ran 8:19 solo from the gun. See you tomorrow!
