a pregnant silence

Why are you talking so much?

There’s a lot of strange people in this city! They speak with such conviction and confidence that it makes me wonder. A 28 year-old girl who already knows everything about relationships. A 24 year-old guy who blogs every morning on obscure topics that most people don’t understand. A 21 year-old girl who already knows everything about salvation…

…it’s a bit suspicious.

Are you talking to convince someone else of something or are you still trying to convince yourself of the very thing you’re saying?

Maybe you have some secret knowledge on “the truth” about dating, politics, religion, fashion, music, teaching…

The brilliant teacher isn’t the one that tells you exactly what he/she believes! The brilliant teacher is the one that gets you to engage with yourself and to think for yourself without saying much at all. In a way, the teacher becomes invisible, a sort of pregnant silence, which is there but not there.

The role of the teacher isn’t far from the role of the poet.

It’s different in trivial subjects like math and sciences where the answers really don’t matter in that they don’t change how you live. In those sorts of subjects you simply learn the objective, teach the objective and move on to your next lesson. But in the subjects which actually matter, the subjects which influence how we act towards our neighbour and how we live on a day-to-day basis; it is those subjects that I’m talking about…those subjects require a sort of indirect communication.

I’m reading books, blogs, hearing sermons and talks that look more like this…

Lists of points simply reiterate to the individual what they already know. Lists simply help the individual recollect what he/she has forgotten. I doubt that anything can be taught in one line of text, one chapter or even a dozen books.

If you could follow someone for one day, someone who demonstrated this pregnant silence, I’m positive you would learn more than you would if you read his blog every morning.
